Match Report
The reserves won what the coach described as “the best win he has ever been a part of”, showing courage, discipline and great skill to beat a Yarra Valley team that won by 75 points last time the two teams met.
Down by 2 goals at quarter time, the message from the coach was clear and very positive – win the ball, keep the pressure on and hit your targets. It clearly worked as the Nobs piled on 7 goals in the third quarter to gain the upper hand with Hunts, Dobbo, Brownie, BJ and Bubsy getting on top in the midfield and Junior moving to centre half forward with immediate impact.
A highlight of the second quarter was Dobbo flicking the ball up to himself, turning and snapping the goal – admitting after the game that it was pure laziness that motivated him to kick the ball to himself – I would like to see that again.
Starting the game undermanned, the injuries came thick and fast in the first half with Combi and Morro both doing their hammies and Tommy Emmett being KO’ed. Early in the third quarter Mick Rappa showed great courage to go back with the flight of the ball to spoil a certain Yarra Valley mark, also coming off the ground injured although being sent back out there as there was no one to come on. Dobbo and Junior also suffered blows to the head but continued to play.
The backline was under siege in the third quarter with Yarra Valley taking advantage of our injuries to kick 3 goals to 2 in the third quarter to put the pressure back on. The backline was again solid with Nath Hrovatin, Cam Fox, Marto and Bones working hard to repel a number of Yarra Valley inside 50’s.
The match was there to be won in the last quarter and the boys showed great courage and determination to kick 4 goals in the last quarter to put the game beyond doubt. Scullie, Davo, Whitless, Nick Marchbank and Sammy all important in the last quarter along with Micky Rappa taking some huge contested grabs and kicking goals despite being very sore from the earlier contest.
All up a great win against the odds which shows what this team is capable of.
Next week the reserves come up against another side that beat them convincingly in the first round of games – get behind them and see what they can do again this week!
