Match Report
Another week, another win for the reserves. Four in a row, again getting revenge on a team that won convincingly the first time we played them. There were a number of changes from the side that beat Yarra Valley last week, but the same attitude and concentration as the boys came from behind (again) to grind out another win. The team was harder and better for longer than the opposition, kicking goals when it mattered and importantly preventing the opposition from scoring freely. Danny (“the King”) King and Stuart (“Bubsy”) Matherson were outstanding in the middle of the ground, clearing it with ease and kicking a goal each for the day. Luke Fogarty and Mick Rappa were also hard at it in the middle of the ground and the team welcomed back Josh Cassell who was classy on the wing.
The backline were rock solid and the key reason for the win. Nath Hrovatin was outstanding again, with countless long kicks off his left boot that turned a Bulleen attack into a NOBS attack. Cam Fox played his best game for the club, doing a great job in shutting down the oppositions best player after quarter time. Grints, Whitless, Sammy and Junior were also great down back.
What the forward line lacked in fitness it certainly made up for in experience with Willsy flashes of 08’ in his 50th game – kicking a clutch goal in the last quarter to put the result beyond doubt. Tom Murfett also played his best game for the year, responding from a friendly rev up to hit blokes lace out and kick one of his own. Scullie (1 goal) bravely played with a broken finger, and although he could not mark or kick somehow played very well. Brown and MCann were classy up forward, chiming in with a goal each when we needed it.
Thanks to FOG and Timmy Mayfield from the clubbies who not only helped out with numbers, were very good all day. A special mention to Hugh Bismire who was also filling in and had his nose broken putting his body on the line.
Another great win and the focus again turns to next week, a team that beat us in the first round of matches. Get down to training and around Con and let’s make it 5 in a row.
