Match Report

Talk about going down the wire! After Brunswick NOBSPC led all day at Garvey Oval a Parade kick after the siren could have deprived us of our first win for the season. When the kick fell five metres short to seal a four point victory over the old enemy the overwhelming feeling was one of relief at having held on (although it must be said that our new coach Luke Mahoney looked like he had seen a ghost!).

In the opening quarter NOBs had winners all over the ground and the 19-point margin at the first break flattered Parade, with two easy goals conceded against the run of play. Such a dominant display deserved better.

What followed in the second term was perplexing as we continued to dominate possession but seemed intent on playing on the defensive side of the ground with truly horrible kicking to our forwards. It was very poor football and we just clung on to a one-goal lead at half-time.

Thankfully we rediscovered the way to goal in the third term, mainly through the agency of big Kyle Docherty who really stood up when the game was in the balance with two goals. Chris Ford was switched from defence – where he had been very good – to attack and also slotted a crucial major, while a good team goal saw us go into the final break 22 points up.

A Parade goal from the bounce to start the last quarter reduced the margin to 16 points, before Pat Kelly – who had an excellent game – kicked a fine running goal to steady things.

An arm wrestle ensued for the next 10 minutes. Then for the first time in the game Parade got on top as we fatigued and our lead looked vulnerable. Fortunately Parade missed some of their many chances as we desperately clung on, before a goal with a minute remaining made it a one-kick game.

At the 34-minute mark Parade attacked again but we looked to have cleared the ball to the wing. But the kick went straight up in the air with a Parade player under the ball, who dropped it, but then was tackled without the ball! He calmly passed it to a loose teammate 45m out and the siren went. Thankfully the kick to win the game was into the wind and the rest is history.

We had a number of good players over the course of the day, but in addition to those mentioned above the best four-quarter performers were Todd Cleary, Gerrard Bence, Mick O’Donoghue and Evan Cole.

The big games keep on coming as we meet another neighbour in Therry Penola at home on Ladies Day next week. Don’t miss that one!
