Match Report

Freshened up after the bye and with the sun on their backs, Brunswick NOBSPC put recent disappointments behind them to record a strong 18-point victory over Ivanhoe at Ford Park on Saturday.

The game was played in ideal conditions and both sides were hard at the contest in the opening term, with Ivanhoe sneaking the first two goals, before the NOBs fought back to take the lead at the break.

Captain Lachlan Ezard racked up the possessions, ruckman Simon Harwood was also prominent, while fan-favourite Todd Patterson returned to the fray and immediately provided a target up forward alongside Kyle Adams.

The second quarter was a forgettable affair as our disposal efficiency rates – especially on forward entries – dropped, but thankfully we only conceded one goal as the home team also struggled.

At half-time coach Mahoney implored his players to lower their eyes when going forward and Tim Weaver set the standard by doing just that to create the opening goal. Another major followed straight out of the centre as we took control of the game. Our pressure and intensity over the ball rose to season-best levels, as did our clearances and marks inside 50.

A five goal to one quarter was good reward for effort and, moreover, Ivanhoe were showing signs of cracking before the final break. The whole 22 had contributed to the cause, with Pat Kelly providing a highlight with a magnificent tackle and goal mid-way through the term.

The final quarter would be a battle of wills, as we began tentatively in search our first win for many weeks and conceded the opening goal against the run of play. A goal to the ever-dangerous Adams settled the nerves, before back-to-back majors to Gerrard Bence – both the result of excellent team play – sealed the four points.

There were many good players on the day, headed by Adam Oakley, who is getting back to his best. Harwood continued his good form in the ruck, while Ezard, Kelly, Jeremy Nettlefold and Andrew Roberts were prolific ball-winners. Kyle Docherty kicked critical goals, while Chris Ford was excellent at full back and Danny King as hard as a cat’s head all day.

With other results going our way, this was a crucial weekend in the context of our season. We now need to back it up next round against PEGS. See you there.
