Match Report
This is what amateur footy is all about. Playing the match of the round in an early season eight-point game against third-placed Williamstown CYMS on a windswept Fearon Reserve with the game up for grabs at three-quarter time. When Captain Kewy slotted the first goal of the last term we had cause to cheer, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be our day after all as the home side kicked the next four majors and we were left to rue one that got away.
We started the match brilliantly with the wind and had three goals on the board in quick time. After giving up a few easy goals we still led by 21-points at the first change. The second quarter proved to be our undoing as we went into our shell and lost all run off half-back. It made no sense as Willy had showed that kicking goals into the wind was not a problem. Anyway, it was a one-point margin in favour of Willy at the half, as it was at the final break after an arm wrestle in the third term. The last quarter was disappointing, but overall the effort of the players couldn’t be questioned. It was a lack of coherence and consistency in our play that cost us in the end. Plus the fact that Willy had a bloke who kicked nine goals in one of the more dominant games you will see.
Adam Oakley was the spark in the first quarter and kept it going in a clear BOG performance for us. Jezza Nettlefold continued his strong form in the midfield, while Matt Keown was great with another five goals. Peter Carter was really hard at it and new cult hero Ahmed Rafei showed class up forward. The back line generally did well under plenty of pressure, led by Mick O’Donoghue.
We are still second on the ladder and face off against undefeated Therry Penola next week. A big crowd is assured at Gillon Oval. Bring it on.
