Match Report
NOBSPC got the job done with a comprehensive 80-point win at Melbourne High School’s famous ground. After wasting a strong breeze in the first quarter with 4.9, we then let the home side get back in the game in the second, before an 11.8 bombardment in the third quarter settled the matter. The last quarter was a 5.2 apiece.
The move of Mick O’Donoghue from full-back to full-forward provided the greatest interest on the day. Mick was prominent early but missed four set shots and some other gilt-edged chances to get on the scoreboard in the first half. As a result he was sent back to his old spot where he promptly took a couple of saving marks. The coach then swung him forward again and six second half goals ensued. Mick later said he just needed to get his eye in early.
There were many good players on the day. Early on Peter Shepherd was back to his dominant best, while Matt Keown was our truly reliable target up forward, kicking six of his own. BOG was Adam Oakley, whose work rate continues to go through the roof. Nick Holt was strong in defence. That youngster Daniel Tonkin built on his great recent form, while midfielders Clarkson, Byrne, Nettlefold and Ezard were all good.
We have now secured a finals spot, but remain one game away from second place, so all we can do is ensure we win the last two and pray Williamstown might slip up.
Next week is our last home game against a pressing Old Mentonians, playing in the old NOBs jumpers on our inaugural Founders’ Day. Please join us for lunch and the game as we march towards the finals.
