Match Report

Someone forgot to turn the sun on this week. Despite peeping through the grey and miserable clouds, it failed to produce a single beam of warmth on this cold Saturday morning. At least the Ressies’ hearts were warmed by the beautiful Acknowledgement of Country from Yorta Yorta, Kurnai, Walpiri and Wiradjuri woman Natarsha Bamblett. Acknowledging both country and how important it is to respect people’s identity and take pride in yourself. The vibes were on point as the teams faced each other in the ceremony and reflected on the meaning of the round.

The Reserves went out ready to show off their colours and spirit. They were going to need it coming up against the team well and truly dominating the top of the ladder, undefeated in the 13th round of the competition.

The Renegades started strong, keeping Mazenod to only one goal and forcing three behinds in the first quarter. Tremendous efforts by Jane-o, Darcy and Trel defending the back line. There was minimal reward for your kick outs with a strong headwind, so Darcy always ensured she took as much ground as possible out of the defensive square. With little influence once in the air, the ball was regularly forced into the dead pocket or boundary. The Boundary Ump will undoubtedly feel it the next day after quite the upper body workout with endless throw-ins.

The ongoing ball-up and throw-ins meant our rucks were under constant pressure. Sadly we lost Eliza Mead to a dreaded ankle injury early in the match, so a tremendous effort by Lloydy (Sam Lloyd) and Wallis Hamilton for their relentless tap tap tapping. It was a wet and slippery game, so there was plenty of groundwork and plenty of mud.

Anyone who spent time in the centre square will have woken up with silky soft skin Sunday after the mud bath that was the midfield. Glad Aimy Nguyen can take a little bit of Gilon oval with her to Canberra after being buried deep in the mud. Testament to how hard she goes at the ball. Never to be defeated, she was up and at the ball all game making some impressive clearances through the packs. Mazenod found their feet by the second quarter and started to show why they were marching through the season undefeated. They scored eight goals by the third quarter and made it near impossible to get much time in our fifty for a shot at goals.

You need only look at the number of behinds in the final quarter to know just how hard the Renegades worked. Great to have Meg’s steady hands and good footy sense back on the grounds and working hard alongside Kaila and Rayhna, who are never shy about getting physical in the contest.

Another hard defeat on the field without a point on the board, but nothing a good night of karaoke and a Christmas in July celebration can’t shake off!
