Match Report

The impact of Covid on the community over the last two years is undeniable, and the footy community is no exception. The Renegade’s numbers in pre-season have been unusually low as Covid continues to wreak havoc and people make up for lost time with family and friends. Our opposition, Ivanhoe, struggled to field a Reserves side and many players needed to play two games. This is a challenge many clubs face, and Round One was a good indicator of what may be ahead.

With grey skies and on and off drizzle for the first two quarters, it was a slippery start to the season for the Seniors, but that didn’t seem to phase them. Coming out with a bang and a clash, Sash Dougherty showed Ivanhoe she’d not been couchbound all lockdown. She produced some big hits and dominated her way through packs in the first quarter. The ball spent plenty of time inside our 50, and JB ensured that effort was rewarded with a glorious first goal of the game (and the season) for the Renegades.

Jonesy (Bella Jones) showed us she was returning to footy with a vengeance, dominating the midfield in the ruck. There was a clear calmness and control to the game, which we have the likes of GK (Grace Kendall), Woodhouse (Clare Woodhouse), Mon Gray, Shelly Lampard and Snowy (Ange Snowden) to thank. The group craftily moved the ball through the midfield. Badsy (Emily Collins) should get herself a drizabone jacket and an Akubra hat because she belongs in the outback – always there, getting the first handball receive from the pack and pushing into our forward line. It was proving to be an even competition with a lot of time spent battling it out in the midfield. Renegades managed to stay just in the lead at halftime.

We’ve been blessed with some incredible new players who’ve taken to the game like a duck to water. A huge first game for MC (Mary Claire Geneau), fresh off the ice-hockey rink in Canada and proving to be an absolute weapon wherever she is placed on the field. It is always the quiet ones that come up with the loudest moves on the field. We are loving the bold tackles and big energy that Gabby (Gabrielle Milton) is bringing down the wing.

Our backline has always been the team’s backbone, and this season is proving no different. The third and fourth quarters had Ivanhoe fighting back hard. The under-pressure coordination between Erin O’Conner, Thunder (Soma) and Kathy Madden makes you wonder whether they have some sort of telepathic powers that help them read each other’s moves. The legs were getting heavy, but the pressure stayed on throughout the second half, Ivanhoe getting ahead by a goal in the fourth quarter and Renegades not quite able to win back their lead. Two more minutes, and we would have walked away with a win. Still, heads were held high against a very skilled side. We’re already looking forward to the rematch!
