Match Report
The U19’s played their final game against league leaders Old McKinnon/Glen Eira AFC who had been beaten once and finished with a percentage of 291. Brunswick U17’s Colts season had finished the week before giving the coaches a pool of local talent for one of the few times this season. For the most part of season 2018 the U19’s played each week with top up players from University Blacks and fill-ins due to injuries.
The weekend’s team was made up of experienced 16, 17 and 18 year old’s and whilst they never looked like winning, took it right up to the league leaders making them earn the win with some fierce contests and displays of clean ball-handling throughout the game. An eventual 50 point loss was less than most other teams had achieved. The season’s final home game was more indicative of what can be expected from the U19’s in 2019 as this year’s U17’s colts join the playing group.
Despite only winning 3 games for the season, the fielding of an U19’s team for the first time in a decade has proven to be a success, feeding local teenagers to the Seniors. Eight 19’s played Seniors and 3 played Reserves. Two U17’s Colts played Seniors, 1 played Reserves and eight U17’s played in the U19’s. Some weekends the U17’s Colts played two games. One for the U19’s on Saturday and again for the Junior Club on Sunday.
There is a lot of upside in the playing group for 2019 and a lot to look forward to next year.
