Match Report

It was a somewhat overcast morning that greeted the white hot renegades on Sunday morning as they began the long trek to Western Werribee to to take on the Manor Lakes Storm in their second match for the year. Coming of a brutal encounter the previous week the coaches were unsure what to expect after the first week high had passed.

Packed with the new uniforms, the self-titled sexiest ladies in division 5 VWFL, gathered and were quickly called into line as coach Barlow introduced the latest weapon into the arsenal with cutting edge iPad technology to keep track of positions, rotations, goal kickers and even wind direction!

The first quarter was a tight tussle as the Storm playing their first home game were keen to put on a good display for their patriotic home crowd, believed to be a venue record of 15 adults, 25 children, 3 dogs and numerous crows. The midfield trio of Mel, Kel and Mel quickly confused the home team with the renegades moving the ball cleanly and quickly down the middle of the ground and capitalizing with a season high 3 goals for the quarter. Jess Craig was exquisite in the forward 50 bagging 2 for the quarter.

The second quarter became a dour struggle between the two teams with defence being the key offence. The backline lead by Jungles, Sas and Gemma were harder to pass than liberal party budget, and the midfielders were battled strongly to keep the second quarter goalless for both teams.

At half time the ‘Gades went into the rooms 3 goals in front and the players, supporters and coaching staff tried to keep a lid on the excitement. However, the medical team was working over time with injuries galore to hamstrings, hands, toes and shoulders putting a waiting list on the bag of ice.

The third quarter began and Kel Law momentarily forgot the sport she was playing and dribbled the ball 40m in front of her before diving on the ground and appealing for a hand ball from the opposition, who quickly reminded her the world cup doesn’t start until next week. Woodhouse was dominating the in and under contests and the forward line were the beneficiaries kicking away to a comfortable lead at 3/4 time. Traci put her hand up for play of the day with a dashing run off half back despite claiming no interest in anything to do with actual running for the day.

With the game well and truly in hand, the final quarter was party time and the backs / forwards swapped positions to experience the other side. Jana continued her improvement from last week and ran all day, with Dorz (aka Stevie J) kicking goal of the year after roving the good work of SAS (I think)!

Overall, it was a great effort and through some sort of magic on behalf of the VWFL see’s the team sit atop of the Div 5 ladder heading into round 4. Next week sees round 2 of the grudge match against Melb Uni at the early time of 10am. Get on down for what is sure to be another classic encounter!
