Match Report
On a typical midwinter Saturday Brunswick got the job done in convincing fashion over Aquinas at Gillon Oval with a comfortable 79-point win.
After only squeaking past the same opposition six weeks earlier, a close contest was expected, but the NOBs were better prepared on their home deck and put the game away early, with six first quarter goals to one, led by Gus Coverdale with a couple.
The dominance continued in the second term, as gun recruit Harris Mittar floated forward and kicked two majors in a minute, while Paul Scamporlino, who was enjoying being back in the seniors, snapped his second of the game to bring up the team’s tenth well before the main break.
Aquinas provided more resistance after halftime, but Brunswick still managed to extend the margin, with a brace to Aidan Pollock the highlight of the third quarter, while in the final term Coverdale snagged his third for the game and big full forward Hayden Parker ended up kicking a lazy four.
Although opposition on the day may have been limited, Brunswick’s ball movement was clean and fast and their defence was by-and-large very good. Tougher assignments await but the signs were promising after the disappointment of losing to Parkside the week before.
Best on the day were Mittar, who showed he can play in the midfield and at either end, the ever-consistent Ben Wilson and Angus Ross, who knocked up getting possessions. Jake Ralston was again fantastic in defence, while Jonny Haddad was all class, especially in the air, and Will McKenzie never stopped running and presenting on the wing.
This week the team travels to the wilds of Ashburton to meet St Mary’s Salesian as they look to consolidate their spot in the four. See you there!
