FAVOURITE SONS RETURN!
In a massive coup for the club, we are delighted and excited to announce the club legend Luke “Chunky” Boyle is returning to Gillon Oval in a coaching capacity. Chunky is going to come on board to help Ron, Simon and the team on match day, and in particular with the specific lines and opposition analysis. As a St Joseph’s old boy, and as you will see from his profile below, Chunky has a long and distinguished career with NOBSPC, starting out with us in 1990. He was also the record games holder before the dynamic duo came along a few years later.
Chunky’s former coach Garry Foulds had this to say:
“Coached him for 3 years and it was in his later years, however he was a proven classy amateur player. Versatile and skilled, his disposal was excellent in particular his handball which was accurate and penetrating. Finally won a well-deserved B & F in my last year 2004 where he led the way in a difficult year on field.”
Former team mate Tim Halpin had a different perspective:
“Boyle was well known for his ‘sprinkler’ and ‘lawn mower’ moves on the dance floor as well as his over the shoulder look-away handball on the field! A left footer from memory that always kept himself very fit which attributed to his longevity.”
We can’t wait to have Luke down at the club to impart some of his wisdom and experience. We also hope this starts the ball rolling with getting many of the Old Boys from his era down to the club throughout the year.
Welcome aboard Luke!

The good news keeps on rolling with recently retired* legend Scott Sleep also agreeing to help out the coaching team. Sleepo will be a very valuable asset for many parts of the team, and we are sure that he will work particularly well with the forward line where he did some of his best work!
We won’t go into Sleepo’s long list of achievements (as we celebrated them many times last year) however he and good mate Daniel Tonkin are the current games record holders with Sleepo taking home many awards throughout his 18 years on field – including the 2010 reserves premiership and 2012 Senior premiership. He has been an “off field mentor” for many players over the years, developing “off field players” such as Bobby Sheehan, Joel Scanlon and more recently Dean Beaumont.
It is a great reflection on both Sleepo and the club that he is keen to be involved in 2015. Sleepo owes nothing to the club as he has given his all over the years both on and off the field.
Great to have you remain at the club Sleepo!
*retirement not confirmed, still a chance to line up in the fwd pocket…
