Topic: AFL Women’s football

The Brunswick Football Club invites all members and supporters along to next week's second One Club dinner for 2016. The evening provides an opportunity for members across the 3 clubs to socialise and provide a positive learning environment.

The inaugural season of the national women’s league for season 2017 was released in June, with licenses for clubs being issued to many of the former VFL Clubs. The growth in the number of women and girls playing club football has doubled over the past five years, as record growth year-on-year has seen female participation reach 25 per cent of the total number of Australians playing our indigenous game. In 2015 there were 163 new women’s teams and more than 318,000 total female participants. This year we are forecasting 250 new teams will take the field.

  • The club dinner will have a number of special guests from Brunswick’s U15 Girls and Renegades teams for a Q&A session on how they became part of this enormous growth in AFL football.

This will be followed with Melbourne player Jessica Dal Pos. Jessica’s experience in AFL football is significant. Jessica started playing football at the U16 Youth Girls level and progressing into the U18 level where she won three (3) B&F, in addition to Captaining two (2) U18 Premierships. Jessica’s transition into senior football progressed with the Darebin Falcons, playing in three (3) senior Premierships. At the state level Jessica has represented Victoria twice (2013 & 15), + selected as an All Australian (2010). Jessica was drafted by Western Bulldogs in 2013 and now plays with the Melbourne Football Club.
