Match Report
Reserves Practice Match
With Old Melburnians’ Reserves team folding, St Mary’s-Salesian came to the rescue and filled the void with a scratch match at the Gillon. Sal kicked an early goal to get the team firing. Ruby was outstanding with countless inside 50’s setting up Stasi who was taking big marks along the half forward and Maddie W winning many one on one contests at full forward.
Katie was instrumental down back alongside Bec, shutting down their forward opponents and owning the goal square.
St Mary’s were desperately holding onto the lead but the Renegades weren’t giving up. Captain LJ led from the front, getting in and under at every contest supported by Goodesy who was taking crucial contested marks and Brit who was absolutely everywhere.
Consistent teamwork and never giving up led to a fantastic come from behind win, the first of hopefully many this season.
Seniors
The Prems went into the first home game hoping to continue their form and make it two in a row and they started right where they left off with plenty of early shots on goal.
Dougherty was taking big pack marks and setting up the forwards with Mon Grey having a day out and slotting 4 majors, one being on the run due to no one standing on the mark from a long way out.
Gem’s game was on point, working hard in the air, along the wing and on the ground whilst an inspirational run from Pia had the spectators cheering.
Mad Dog Watson was carried from the field with an unfortunate ankle injury, the opposition would have breathed a sigh of relief as she was having a day out but the momentum continued with Clarky playing an absolute belter and Flicka continuing her great form.
Third quarter time Coach Hennessy’s message was strong “That’s a better quarter but still not our best!” and the team responded, peppering the goals with another 8 scoring shots.
At the final siren the Renegades came out victors by 71 points in a good spirited game against opponents we’ll look forward to playing again and celebrating afterwards.
