“Gavan joined North Old Boys Football Club in its first year in the Amateurs in 1963, having previously been educated at North CBC, and played mainly at Centre Half Forward in all 19 games that season, including the First Semi Final loss to Old Camberwell Grammarians. All players who played in NOBs’ first year were referred to as “The Immortals” by then President, Bill Stuckey.

Gavan played 54 games in total for the Club between 1963 and 1965 (24 in the 1st 18, and 30 in the Reserves), whilst also serving on the Committee. He was a very popular figure at the Club in its earlier days and will be sadly missed by his contemporaries. He passed away on March 7th following a long period of illness.”

“Sarge was the first player in the footy club to play 50 games. I was the second. It gave him great pleasure to remind me of that – the 2s played an extra final. He gave me a point or so as a country bookmaker on the strength of it. I will miss Sarge.”
