Match Report
There is nothing quite like getting those precious four points, especially after some tough weeks and when a bit of history is made with our club’s first win as Brunswick FC, as we defeated Ivanhoe in a good contest at Gillon Oval on Saturday.
Early on it looked like we might do it easily. We dominated possession and hit the scoreboard, with the exciting Dom Sullivan leading the way with two goals. Some late (easy) misses meant we didn’t make the most of the breeze, but still the signs were good.
Things turned around in the second term. While we had plenty of chances, we badly lost our radar in front of goal and the Hoes couldn’t miss as they slammed on six majors. Thankfully Sullivan kicked his third midway through the term, then James Schmidt nailed a crucial shot after the halftime siren to drag it back to a one goal game.
The premiership quarter would prove to be critical, particularly as we were two down on the bench. We got off to a flyer with great goals to Geremie Ganino and Daniel Mott, before Ivanhoe fought back to hit the lead. Then came the big moment of the game. In just his second senior game, former rugby player James Moverley found himself with a set shot. He didn’t look confident but nailed the goal and we didn’t relinquish the lead again. Chris Gavaghan, after taking a hanger in the square, and James Bell, in an excellent farewell performance, then nailed crucial majors before the final break.
Ganino snagged the first goal of the final quarter to stretch our lead to five goals and Brunswick supporters were on quite good terms with themselves. But footy is never that easy, is it? Ivanhoe came back hard, kicking the next three goals and putting our defence under plenty of pressure as it became a two-goal game. To the credit of all players, we stopped the run against us and then iced the game with goals – deservedly – to the ever-threatening Ganino and Sullivan.
There were many other good players on the day, especially key midfielders Aidan Pollock and Nick Burgin and tough defenders Zach Bye, Liam Whelan and Dean Beaumont.
Next Saturday we make the short trip to Ransford Oval to take on West Brunswick as we look to bring home another four points. See you there!
